Assistant Child Care Teacher, Early Learning Center - Georgetown University Law Center

The Georgetown Law Early Learning Center has been designed to meet the emotional, social, physical, and intellectual needs of children in a safe, nurturing environment. Toys and equipment have been chosen to develop fine and gross motor skills and give children opportunities to explore and select their own activities. Art, dramatic play, blocks, discovery materials, manipulatives, and books are some of the "interest areas" incorporated in the Center. We are conveniently located on the lower level of the Gewirz Student Center, just a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol.

Job Overview

The Assistant Child Care Teacher, working directly under the guidance of a Lead Teacher, provides support in planning, initiating, and implementation of appropriate daily activities that promote positive development and learning based on the strengths, interests, and needs of the children. They also assist the Lead Teacher in communicating regularly with parents and guardians about their child's activities and development.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of Georgetown Law Early Learning Center, the Assistant Child Care Teacher interacts with university families that include student, faculty, and staff, and enrolled families from the greater metropolitan community. All staff members support the University's mission by addressing faculty, staff, and student families' need for the early education and care of their young children.

They work collaboratively in a team and independently, build positive relationships, communicate clearly and effectively, demonstrate flexibility and reliability, exhibit respect, empathy; and care for the children and their families, colleagues, and other members of Georgetown University and the surrounding community.

Physical requirements
  • Lift and carry up to 40 pounds
  • Use a wide range of motion, including but not limited to, sitting down and standing up with children, getting up off of and down onto the floor, moving quickly, walking, running, hopping, dancing, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Work at least two hours daily outside in temperatures between 32 and 90 degrees in a variety of weather conditions such as, sunny, cloudy, overcast, and ground conditions that are dry, damp, wet, or snowy


Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Earned at least one of the following: A) Associate's (or higher) degree in any field from an accredited institution; B) High School diploma (or its equivalency) and a current Child Development Associate credential; or C) High school diploma (or its equivalency) and certification of training and competence in the field of early childhood and will earn a CDA credential by December 2023.


Preferred qualifications
  • One or more years as an assistant teacher in a licensed child development center
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Current Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification


Qualifications before and during employment
  • Criminal background check clearance, child protection registry clearance, drug and alcohol testing clearance, and any other requirements outlined by OSSE, Georgetown University, and relevant regulations.
  • Achieve or accomplish - within 30 days of employment - Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification, trainings, and other certifications
  • Annual professional development (currently 21 hours)
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification
