Position Summary
The Seattle Colleges are looking for innovative and dedicated faculty members, who have a demonstrated commitment to working within a college community that is diverse and serves students from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic and academic backgrounds.

The Early Childhood & Family Studies program offers a range of study opportunities for students wanting to work with children and families. We strive to prepare students who are interested in working with children during the early childhood years (pre-natal to 8 years) in a variety of settings: in social/human service areas (child welfare, social/family services, parent education, family advocacy, warp-around service areas, etc.), as early learning teachers in ECE classrooms and child care settings, and before/after school programs.

Adjunct faculty will teach part-time in a wide range of early childhood and family studies courses. Successful applicants will be able to work effectively with students, colleagues, and staff in a campus setting that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding reflective of our urban environment.

Specific teaching assignments will be determined based on an instructor's background and availability. Successful applicants will be invited to teach at Seattle Central College.

Successful applicants may be invited to interview at Seattle Central College. Specific teaching assignments will be dependent on scheduling and available courses.

Candidates should be willing to teach in a variety of formats such as in-class, hybrid, online and varied class times including days, evenings, and weekends according to program needs.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT-Seattle.

    • Your experience working in the field of education, in ECE and/or K-12, and/or working providing health/human/family services
    • Your experience teaching adults. Your description should include the topic of content being taught, the audience being served (e.g., cultural backgrounds, languages, any special programming such as ESL, cohort groups, I-BEST, etc.)

Essential Functions
  • Develop the course syllabus following departmental guidelines and in accordance with the master course outline (MCO), and submit syllabus to the division office at the start of each quarter
  • Teach classes as assigned for the ECFS program in face-to-face classroom settings and/or online using the CANVAS learning management system
  • Prepare for and provide quality teaching that includes planning & preparation, instructional practice, and grading
  • Maintain accurate records of students
  • Be available to students and respond to questions and concerns as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities, college policies, division policies and department policies

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Education, Child & Family Studies, Play/Art/Expressive Therapy, Human Development, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field
  • Background and understanding of whole child development, and culturally-responsive teaching/learning
  • Depending on the course assigned to teach, a minimum of three years of full-time professional experience, 1) working directly with children and/or families in a formal early childhood education setting, K-3 environments, or in out-of-school time/child care programs, or 2) working with adults in therapeutic, health/human, or family/social service settings
  • Knowledge of collaborative approaches for working with children and families
  • Ability and commitment for working within a diverse college community that serves students from a broad spectrum of cultures, ages, backgrounds, and abilities
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others in a professional setting
  • The ability to teach in multiple modalities (e.g., in the classroom, hybrid, online) and to maintain a flexible schedule

Physical Requirements
Ability to perform a range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
