Position Description:


Clarke Schools, Northampton, MA (position is at the Hampshire Regional Middle School classroom) - Part-Time

In this position, the Teaching Assistant assists the staff and students of the K-8 program in classroom settings and in one-to-one settings as needed. Related responsibilities vary and range from preparing curriculum materials, working with individuals or small groups of students on tasks planned by the teacher, providing coverage during lunch and recess; providing substitute coverage as needed; performing other related tasks as needed. This position


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers, support personnel, and administrators to implement the educational program

  • Work with individuals or small groups of children on tasks planned by the teacher

  • Assist classroom teacher in full-group lessons

  • Participate in staff development and department staff meetings when possible

  • Assist teacher with instructional preparation activities

  • Assist students with personal or developmental needs

  • Prepare instructional materials

  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills

  • Implement behavior management programs as necessary

  • Cover classroom responsibilities in the absence of the teacher

  • Assists in supervision of children during recess, lunch periods, and during special activities

  • Exhibit appropriate grooming and dress serving as an acceptable role model for students

  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as stated in the employee handbook guidelines

  • Be punctual and regular in attending all school functions and duties

  • Cooperate effectively in all matters while maintaining student confidentiality

  • Accompany students to instructional settings during the school day

  • Facilitate student communication and access to the social and curriculum in school settings

  • Perform other instructional and supervisory duties as assigned



Other Duties:



  • Possibly teaching art, music or physical education to small groups of students



Physical demands:



  • Walking from classroom to classroom

  • Spending time outdoors during recess

  • Getting up and down from low chairs and or the floor

  • Carrying materials for instructional purposes





Education, licenses, certifications, skills, and experience



  • B.A. preferred in education or related field or experience with children in a school setting

  • Willingness to be first aid and CPR trained

  • Comfortable with technology (students use Chromebooks)

  • Flexible and willingness to take direction as needed to meet program needs

  • Positive communication skills and interactions with children

  • Support and understand Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech's mission, goals and policies

  • Follow all the safety and health policies including Covid-19 health and safety protocols

  • Desire to work as part of a team
